At first glance, mango pollination seems like a problem already solved. Walk through a mango orchard in bloom, and you’ll likely see plenty of pollinator activity. Mango trees (Mangifera indica L.) produce abundant nectar and attract a wide range of insect visitors, including commercial honey bees (Apis mellifera). So if insects are already doing the job, why consider a technological solution?

The Challenge with Natural Pollination
In its native habitat in Southeast Asia, mango is pollinated by a variety of insects and, to some extent, by wind. But as mango cultivation expands to regions where natural pollinators are scarce, most growers rely on commercial beehives for pollination.
While mango flowers do attract honey bees, the environmental conditions during flowering are often far from ideal for honey bees. High temperatures, extreme humidity, strong winds, and irregular rainfall patterns can all disrupt honey bee foraging behavior and reduce visitation rates. The result – suboptimal pollination and inconsistent yields that vary from season to season – even within the same orchard.
The potential benefits of Cross-Pollination
Mango varieties are mostly self-compatible, and their flowers often have overlapping male and female phases, which means they can set fruit without cross-pollination. However, several studies over the years suggest that cross-pollination between different mango varieties can improve fruit quality and increase yield. This may be linked to the genetic diversity of the pollen source, which can enhance fertilization efficiency and seed development – both of which can improve fruit set and overall productivity.
While more research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms of cross-pollination in mango, early findings from around the world – and from our own experimental trials – indicate that encouraging cross-pollination could be a powerful lever for improving mango production.
